Exclusive free partner content - Does the expat life create third culture kids?

In conversation with Philippa Dobree Carey, Founder, FromHighSchoolToUni.

In our recent discussion with Philippa, she explains her experiences living as an expat in Switzerland and how her children (as third culture kids) have developed through the international education system.

Third culture kids (TCK) are individuals who spend a significant part of their developmental years in a culture different from their parents' home culture. Growing up as a TCK can have both advantages and disadvantages. Find out more by reading the article below. Pros:

Cultural awareness

Third culture kids (TCKs) often develop a deep understanding and appreciation for different cultures, making them more adaptable and open-minded.

Language skills

Living overseas can lead to the acquisition of multiple languages, which can be a valuable skill.

Global perspective

TCKs tend to have a broader worldview, which can be an asset in an increasingly globalised world.

Resilience

Frequent moves and exposure to diverse environments can build resilience and adaptability.

Cons:

Identity and belonging

TCKs may struggle with a sense of identity and belonging since they often don't fully identify with any one culture.

Friendship challenges

Frequent moves can make it challenging to establish lasting friendships, leading to a sense of loneliness. We all need a tribe to feel happy and settled. Finding your tribe can be more difficult with frequent moves.

Educational disruption

Moving between countries can disrupt a child's education, causing gaps or differences in the curriculum. Often companies, as well as the military and other global organisations like the UN, offer assistance with school fees as part of a remuneration package. This enables parents to consider retaining continuity in education via a British boarding school - remaining at the same school with their friends and teachers who know them well, while parents move for work.
