How Do I Apply to Eton and Other Elite British Boarding Schools? An Insider’s Guide in Frequently Asked Questions

To apply to Eton College and other elite British boarding schools, you register your child with each school before its deadline, sit the ISEB Common Pre-Test in Year 6, complete each school’s own assessment and interview, and confirm the place through a Year 8 examination. The most important point to grasp is that registration deadlines fall years before entry and vary from school to school, so early planning is essential.

Below we answer the questions high net worth and international families ask us most often.

When should I apply to Eton and top British boarding schools?

You should register two to three years before entry, and often earlier. Eton College now closes 13+ (Year 9) registration on 31 August at the end of Year 5, when a boy is around ten years old. Many online guides still quote the old 30 June deadline, so please check carefully; for September 2029 entry, the deadline is 31 August 2026. Winchester College, Harrow School, Wycombe Abbey and Cheltenham Ladies’ College each set their own registration windows, some of which close equally early. Our Insider’s Guide to Timing a British Elite Boarding School Application explains how to build a realistic timeline.

What is the ISEB Common Pre-Test and how does it fit in?

The ISEB Common Pre-Test is an online assessment sat in the autumn term of Year 6, covering four subjects: English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. It is not a straightforward test, and it rewards structured preparation across all four subjects rather than last-minute revision. Overseas registration is handled through the ISEB Guardian Portal, explained fully in our Insider’s Guide to registering for the ISEB Common Pre-Test from overseas. Full test details are published on the official ISEB website.

Does my child need to attend a British prep school to get in?

No, a British prep school is not compulsory, but it is a genuine advantage. Prep school pupils receive years of embedded preparation for the pre-test and Common Entrance, taught by staff who know the senior schools intimately. Children educated overseas or in non-preparatory settings can absolutely succeed, but they begin at a disadvantage that expert preparation is designed to close. Our guide on why a British prep school is such a powerful step sets out the reasons in detail.

How do overseas and expatriate families apply from abroad?

Overseas families apply by registering through the ISEB Guardian Portal, which creates a single Applicant ID shared with every school on the child’s list. The portal is not new, though it remains poorly understood by families in the USA, Singapore, Dubai, Geneva and beyond. One point often missed is that ISEB does not permit remote online invigilation, so children who cannot sit the test at a registered centre must travel to the United Kingdom to be tested in person under approved invigilation.

Can I still apply if I have missed the registration deadline?

Yes, this is sometimes possible. When an expatriate posting ends abruptly or family circumstances change, occasional places become available outside the standard cycle. This route requires speed, contacts and an open mind about schools. Our Insider’s Guide to securing a last-minute British boarding school place explains how families act decisively in these situations.

How competitive is entry, and how many places are there?

Entry is highly competitive. Eton receives around 1,300 registrations each year for approximately 250 places at 13+, and the picture is similar at other elite schools. Strong scores across all four pre-test subjects, a positive head teacher’s report and a confident interview all matter. We always advise applying to a considered range of schools rather than pinning everything on a single name.

How much does Eton cost?

Eton College fees are £21,891 per half (term) including VAT for 2026/27, which is roughly £65,700 across the three terms of the academic year. The fee covers tuition, boarding, meals and most educational materials, while extras such as trips, music lessons and some activities are billed separately. Overseas families should budget for two additional costs: a deposit equivalent to one full term’s fees on accepting a place, and a £3,000 annual charge for pupils who need Eton to sponsor a UK Student Visa. Fees are reviewed each May so always check current information via the school’s own website, and other elite boarding schools such as Winchester, Harrow and Wycombe Abbey sit in a broadly similar range.

When can I visit the schools?

Schools are best seen in term time, between September and June, when pupils and staff are present and the atmosphere is authentic. Eton, for example, runs its 13+ admissions tours on Monday and Wednesday afternoons during term. We do not recommend summer visits to empty schools, with the sole exception of families urgently seeking a last-minute September place.
