Brighton College – What makes it ‘UK School of the Decade’ according to The Sunday Times?
Kindness, Curiosity and Confidence - three powerful words that define the ethos of Brighton College and create a culture where every child can truly thrive. It’s easy to see why this award-winning institution is widely recognised as one of the top UK boarding schools.
On a recent visit to Brighton College, I set out to understand what these values mean in practice for the children who gain a place here, and how this unique environment helps young people succeed - not just in exams, but also in sport, music, drama, and the arts.
A Strong First Impression
From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with professionalism, warmth and efficiency - a clear indication that this leading British independent school is serious about excellence in every detail.
Brighton College is a large school in terms of pupil numbers, with many day students from the local area. Boarder numbers are growing, and development plans include expansion in boarding accommodation to meet demand. The school is home to both British and international boarding students, creating a diverse, inclusive atmosphere where global perspectives and the confidence to be yourself, are nurtured.
Student Insight: Life as a Boarder at Brighton My guide, Jack, was an exceptional ambassador for the school. Bright, friendly, both interesting and interested, he spoke passionately about the values that underpin daily life at Brighton College. We discussed how a culture of hard work, enthusiasm, and a commitment to trying new things inspires students to reach their full potential.
It’s clear to see there’s an emphasis on the importance of good habits and making a positive contribution to the wider community - a mindset clearly embraced by staff and students alike.
Coincidentally, I was reading the book Atomic Habits by James Clear at the time of my visit. Outlining how to build good habits as a route to success - much of what I saw on my visit resonated with its messaging.
World-Class Facilities & Learning Environment The campus, located in the vibrant city of Brighton, is striking. Every classroom is light-filled and purpose-built, combining the latest educational technology with calming design choices (interior design fans will appreciate the Farrow & Ball colour schemes!). Pupils were visibly engaged and motivated across all subjects.
Whether your child’s passion lies in STEM, the arts, sport or humanities, Brighton College offers a balanced and challenging curriculum with outstanding and inspiring teaching. No area appears to be elevated above another — every child is encouraged, and given the tools and expert guidance, to pursue their unique strengths and interests.
The boys’ boarding house I visited felt homely and well cared-for. Rooms accommodate three, two or one students depending on age, and there's a strong pastoral care system led by the Housemaster, Matron, and Tutors — offering excellent support for boarders.
A Top Choice for UK and International Families Brighton College offers boarding for pupils aged 11 to 18, with excellent results at both GCSE and A-Level. It is especially well-suited for families looking for a UK private school with a global outlook, preparing young people not just for university, but for life.
The ethos of Kindness, Curiosity and Confidence isn’t just marketing speak — it’s alive in every aspect of school life. For the right child, this is a place where extraordinary things happen.
