Prep to Senior School Choices at 11+ or 13+

School gate and dinner party banter can make the senior school choice process confusing for parents. We are fortunate to have diversity of choice across both state and independent sectors, but how do parents decide on the school that is best suited to the needs of their child?

Our team of friendly, professional consultants have years of experience in supporting parents with this decision. Our independent view-point can often bring clarity to the decision-making process. We regularly assist parents to:

  • Decide on their school search area. It must fit with both family and work commitments.

  • Consider the opinions of each parent, whilst keeping an open mind.

  • Review the academic and other attainments of your child to match these up to the right school and consider any additional support they may need.

  • Draw up a list of suitable schools; state or independent, budget, day or boarding, single sex or co-ed, academic strengths and interests of your child, any additional support your child may need and transport links.

  • Decide on their school search area. It must fit with both family and work commitments.

  • Send website links for review.

  • Make a short-list of schools to visit and assist with making visit appointments.

  • Preparing a list of questions which you may need to ask while you are there.

  • Help you to get a feel for atmosphere, ethos, educational philosophy of the Head, staff-pupil relationships and check the curriculum supports your child’s strengths and interests, as well as their future career ambitions.

  • Accompany parents on senior school visits, especially where English is not their first language.

  • Discuss pros and cons of each school after your visits. There may be a couple of front-runners that you feel need a second visit.

  • Assist with the registration, application and interview preparation process.

Success Story – Choosing the Right Day or Boarding School

PREP TO SENIOR SCHOOL CHOICES AND INTERVIEW PREPARATION FOR 13+ for UK PARENT

THE CHALLENGE
With a son attending a day prep school in the Home Counties, this British family needed guidance on possible senior school choices for their son at 13+. Being first-time buyers, they were not familiar with the independent school system, so needed advice and support with the selection, planning, timing, application and preparation process.

THE STRATEGY
Building on the advice they were given by their Prep School Head, our consultant helped the family to review the whole range of senior school options in their search area, as well as explain the application and entry process and help to prepare their son for entry tests and interviews. The boy required learning support for dyslexia, so we assisted the family in finding him a tutor, to help him with exam skills and techniques in preparation for the entry tests.

THE OUTCOME
Parents were successful in securing a place at their first-choice senior school and their son is currently studying towards his GCSE’s. He is happy at school, both socially and academically and meeting his academic potential. His parents feel his needs are met and his talents are nurtured. He also plays for the school’s first football team.
